The phone comes with a 2.4 inch colour screen which is viewable when the handset is in the slide open of slide closed position. 1925 Birthday of actor Paul Newman, who will star on Broadway in Picnic, The Sweet Bird of Youth and The Desperate Hours before going to Hollywood and becoming a film star. He will make a late-career return to the stage in Our Town (2002).

1931 The Theatre Guild produces Lynn Riggs' cowboy play Green Grow the Lilacs, starring Lee Strasberg, Tex Cooper and Franchot Tone. It runs 64 performances at Guild Theatre. A decade later it will be suggested to the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein as the possible basis of a musical. They will turn it into Oklahoma!

1938 Paul Vincent Carroll's play, set in Ireland, contrasts the simple faith of a maid with the learning of a priest. Julie Haydon and Cedric Hardwicke are the Shadow and Substance at the Golden Theatre in New York.

1944 Mary Rolfe is a Wallflower -- and she'll be one for over six months. That's how long Reginald Denham and Mary Orr's comedy will cling to the Cort Theatre. Joel Martson is also in the cast.

1950 Paul Scofield, Claire Bloom and Margaret Rutherford Ring Round the Moon at the Globe Theatre. Peter Brook directs this Jean Anouilh comedy, adapted by Christopher Fry. There will be 682 performances. Spring 1999 saw a revival of the show on Broadway.

1989 Black and Blue opens tonight at the Minskoff Theater. The show is a musical revue, celebrating the influence of American jazz and blues. Black and Blue will receive 10 1989 Tony Award nominations and win three, including one for Ruth Brown as Best Actress in a Musical. Having his first Broadway opening is a 15-year-old tap genius named Savion Glover.

1996 The opening of the Off-Off-Broadway musical Rent proves both triumphant and tragic. The Republic Day of India marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India and the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic on January 26, 1950.

Although India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, it did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead, its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935, and the country was a Dominion, with George VI as head of state and Earl Mountbatten as Governor General. On August 29, 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar as chairman.

A draft Constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on November 4, 1947. The Assembly met, in sessions open to public, for 166 days, spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution. After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution of India became the law of all the Indian lands. The Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950, 10.18 AM IST. Following elections on January 21, 1950, Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India. The Indian National Congress and other parties had been celebrating January 26th as a symbol of Independence, even before India actually became independent. Thus, signing the constitution on January 26, to mark and respect January 26 and the freedom struggle and the freedom fighters.

Granville Austin has described the Indian Constitution drafted by Ambedkar as 'first and foremost a social document.' ... 'The majority of India's constitutional provisions are either directly arrived at furthering the aim of social revolution or attempt to foster this revolution by establishing conditions necessary for its achievement.'

The amending mechanism was lauded even at the time of introduction by Ambedkar in the following words: "We can therefore safely say that the Indian federation will not suffer from the faults of rigidity or legalism. Its distinguished feature is that it is a flexible federation.

"The three mechanisms of the system derived by the Assembly, contrary to the predictions, have made the constitution flexible at the same time protected the rights of the states. They have worked better than the amending process in any other country where Federalism and the British Parliamentary system jointly formed the basis of the constitution"

What Sir Anthony Eden, the Prime Minister of Britain (April 1955 to January 1957), said at the time of the emergence of Indian Republic is relevant in this context. He said, ‘Of all the experiments in government, which have been attempted since the beginning of time, I believe that the Indian venture into parliamentary government is the most exciting. A vast subcontinent is attempting to apply to its tens and thousands of millions a system of free democracy... It is a brave thing to try to do so. The Indian venture is not a pale imitation of our practice at home, but a magnified and multiplied reproduction on a scale we have never dreamt of. If it succeeds, its influence on Asia is incalculable for good. Whatever the outcome we must honour those who attempt it. Even more meaningful was the opinion expressed by an American Constitutional authority, Granville Austin, who wrote that what the Indian Constituent Assembly began was ‘perhaps the greatest political venture since that originated in Philadelphia in 1787.’

"During recent years, it has become fashionable among some citizens to disparage the founders and their document. These individuals disappointed by the developments in the country since 1950, have called for changing the constitution explaining that it has not 'worked'. Such thinking, in my view, is misguided. Constitutions do not 'work', they are inert, dependent upon being 'worked' by citizens and elected and appointed leaders"

The New Orleans Saints needed to hold on against one of the NFL's worst teams. The Indianapolis Colts took advantage of a gift from one of the game's best.

The league's two remaining undefeated teams each avoided their closest scares of the season in Week 10. Will it be the closest the Saints and Colts come to losing this year? Which remaining week presents the biggest hurdle? Is there any chance we see two undefeated teams in one season?

With seven weeks remaining, we try to tackle all of those questions.

The St. Louis Rams seemed like the least likely team to give New Orleans fits. After all, the Saints had won six of their eight games by two scores or more. But the Rams held tough and were only defeated when Marc Bulger’s last-ditch heave went unrewarded.

Now the Saints, who have tied a franchise record with nine straight victories, are seven weeks away from a perfect season.

The good news for Drew Brees and New Orleans is that they face four teams that currently have losing records. The bad news is that they've still got New England - the team that had Indianapolis beat last week until a late-game blunder - still on the schedule.

Based on 10,001 simulations of each game left on the NFL schedule (see below), the Saints have an 89% chance of setting a franchise record with a 10-0 start against Tampa Bay this weekend, but there's little doubt that their stiffest remaining test will come in Week 12 against the Patriots. New Orleans gets New England at home and, according to our current numbers, the Saints take down the Patriots nearly two-thirds of the time and by about a touchdown.

If New Orleans makes it past New England, it will almost certainly get by Washington to go 12-0 in Week 13. Then it's on to back-to-back weeks against NFC playoff contenders. Still, at this point, they win three of every four matchups at Atlanta and hosting Dallas, beating each team by about a touchdown as well.

And if they get through that gauntlet, they could be smooth-sailing to 16-0 with a better than 80% chance of taking down Tampa Bay - again - and Carolina to close out the season.

The Saints never have lower than a 65% chance of losing any individual game. But winning all seven of those in a row is another thing. While favored in every game, New Orleans has just a 22.0% chance to duplicate New England's 2007 feat and finish the regular season unblemished.

With regards to the individual statistics we project as part of our fantasy football analysis, Drew Brees finishes the rest of the season with 2,021 passing yards, 17 TDs and 6 INTs to give him a season total of 4,580 yards, 38 TDs and 15 INTs. The team scores 229 points and allows 142 to finish the year averaging exactly 35 points a game and giving up 21.8 a contest.

The Patriots had the Colts dead to rights on Sunday. And if not for the fourth-down decision heard round the world, Indianapolis might not even be included in this discussion. Instead, Peyton Manning took advantage of New England's turnover on downs and turned it into a 9-0 start.

The toughest part of the Colts' challenge of getting to 16-0 might really be getting to 12-0. And they face their toughest remaining hurdle right away this week as they travel to Baltimore. The Ravens are 5-4 and trying to find themselves after a strong start.

Based on 10,001 simulations of each game left on the NFL schedule (see below), Indianapolis wins 65% of the time by an average of five points.

If the Colts can get by the Ravens, they get another road test at Houston where they win 74% of the time and by just six points. Then they'll host the up-and-coming Tennessee Titans, where they win 75% of the time.

The difficulty of Indianapolis' schedule certainly comes in the next three weeks. If the Colts can survive three more games, they could be in the clear. With the Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills on the slate over the final five weeks, the Colts are not projected to lose more than 20% of the time in 10,001 computer simulations against each of those teams.

While that daunting three-week stretch looks brutal, Indianapolis actually has a better chance of going 16-0 than New Orleans, by mere percentage points. The Colts never have lower than a 69% chance to win any of their remaining games individually, but putting a seven-game streak on top of the nine-game roll they've already put together only occurs 22.2% of the time (just slightly more likely than the Saints).

According to our fantasy football projections, Peyton Manning finishes the rest of the season with 1,858 passing yards, 15 TDs and 4 INTs to give him a total of 4,730 yards, 45 TDs and 11 INTs. The team scores 202 points and allows 123 to finish the year averaging 28.4 points a game and giving up 16.6 a contest.

Never have two teams ever gone undefeated in the same season. Don't expect it to happen this season, either. But as with anything, there is a chance.

The Colts and Saints finish a combined 32-0 just 4.88% of the time. With each team having just over a 1 in 5 chance of ending the regular season without a loss, there is about a 1 in 20 chance that both teams do it.

My latest gadget is the Logitech Harmony 525 programmable remote control. Our coffee table was cluttered with 5 remote controls and it was quite a complicated matter to switch from watching TV to watching a DVD. Changing input on the TV, changing input on the HiFi turning off the set top box, turning on the DVD then switching remotes to control the DVD once it was playing.
Everything can now be controlled through one remote. The Harmony uses a web based programming system based on knowledge of thousands of different device remote controls. You just need to know the model numbers of your TV, DVD etc and it finds the information and programs the remote accordingly. You can then set up activities such as play a DVD. You program the harmony to turn on the DVD player, turn on and switch the HiFi to the DVD5.1input, turn on the TV and switch to the HDMI input - you can even program it to to open the DVD tray ready for you to put in the DVD. I had a bit of trouble getting it to switch to the correct input on my Toshiba LCD because you have to scroll through the inputs but it works like a charm now. Very easy for the wife and kids to get Dad's toys working in harmony. Oh - I got it on sale at Dick Smith Powerhouse for $99.95 - a steal. I like my gadgets but usually wait until they've been out for a year or so and drop to half of their original RRP

When we attended the Greener Gadgets conference last month, we got totally charged up about the great presentations and discussions the panel had. We heard a lot of great ideas and opportunities for gadgets to really become greener, including product takeback programs, efficiency, and cradle-to-cradle philosophies. With that, we present our concept for a greener gadget - LINC.

LINC is a typical touch screen smart phone with all the connectivity and features you come to expect. Its got a cell phone, a media player, a web browser, GPS, downloadable content, Bluetooth, wifi, the latest 3G network. But here’s the catch. LINC is leased to the user as a service, not a product. The user holds on to the device for about a year, and when the next generation of hardware comes along, the user receives a new LINC in the mail. The LINCs inform the user of their hardware upgrade, wirelessly transfer the digital account, and before being shipped back to the manufacturer, LINC informs the user of the next part of its journey.

LINC is to be shipped back to a regional manufacturing facility. The device contains valuable materials like aluminum, glass, and electronic components that the producer can harvest for re-use. Typically, mobile phones contain hazardous waste that goes into a landfill or are left in a desk drawer to sit in.

LINC is designed for automated disassembly. A directed radiant heat beam targets its internal memory metal latch, releasing the assembly. In one step, LINC automatically disassembles into its few simple components, glass, aluminum and its circuit flex. The glass and aluminum, not containing any paints or adhesives, are easily recycled to pure grade materials for immediate reuse. The remaining flexible circuit contains all the electronics necessary for the entire device. It’s full of hazardous materials, but it has been safely recovered for proper disposal. Many of the chip sets can easily be pulled for reuse. Components like the graphics card are out dated for LINC, but can be used in devices like portable gaming systems.

In one step, LINC automatically disassembles into its few simple components, glass, aluminum and its circuit flex.

Linc changes the entire paradigm of the production and consumption model today. If implemented, a design such as this could greatly reduce hazardous waste and improve environmental health by reducing e-waste. But we also wanted something that is very desirable and in line with the kind of gadgets todays users expect. Something that targets all the key issues of today's gadgets and attempts to offer feasible solutions and start a discussion as to how we can do better.

Right now I’m using a Toshiba Satellite 1905-S301 laptop. It’s kinda old and bulky, yet it’s very useful when it comes to my job as a search engine optimizer and my extra career as an amateur blogger. My precious laptop is driven by a fast 2 GHz Pentium 4 processor, with 512 MB of SDRAM (expandable to 1,024 MB), a fast front-side bus speed of 400 MHz, and a 128 MB ATI M6-P graphics chip. It has a 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display, a 40 GB hard drive and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW. It runs on Windows XP Service Pack 2 OS. Actually I bought this laptop from a very good source in Ebay for only 360 dollars. Cheap eh! If you’re planning to buy in Ebay just make sure that the seller is a trusted one and has positive feedbacks from its buyers

MSI, one of the leading manufacturers of computer hardware products has just revealed that their MSI Wind Notebook will be released in the U.S. in June.

According to Andy Tung, MSI’s director of US sales, in an interview with Joanna Stern of LaptopMag:

The product comes in two display-size variations: an 8.9-inch and a 10-inch. Only the 10-inch display will be available to the U.S. market starting June 3rd. The Linux version, running Novel’s SUSE, will have 512MB RAM and an 80GB hard drive. It will retail for $399. The Windows XP version will have 1GB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and Bluetooth, retailing for $549. However according to MSI a base configuration of the Windows XP product will be available for under $500. The product will come in four different colors, including black, white, silver, and pink. Both sizes will be available in these colors. With 6 hours of battery life with the standard six-cell battery.

I’ve seen this kind of laptop somewhere when I was window shopping in the department store. Although the device I saw has a different brand on it and I don’t know what brand it was. This multi functional device, the Alpha 400 Ultra portable Laptop is cheap compared to other laptop brands out there in the market. I guess that’s how a low-end and cheap gadget should be introduced in the market. The Alpha 400 will apparently be priced from $250 (or $180 in volume), and it features a 400MHz Xburst CPU, 128MB of RAM, 1GB or 2GB of flash memory, a 7-inch 800 x 400 display, and will run on Windows CE or Linux. According to the laptop manufacturer Bestlink, the Alpha 400 is designed for communication and multimedia entertainment via Internet accessing through WiFi, ADSL, CDMA or GPRS connection. So if you’re not into high-end laptop or pc technology, then you’d probably buy one of these and just act like a gadget geek and you’re good to go.

Inventec, the Taiwanese Original Design Manufacturer has just unveiled one of their cheap laptops. The Inventec 10.1-inch V10 laptop, one of the cheap laptops out in the Chinese market today. It is powered by a VIA C3 1GHz processor, 128MB of memory and a 20GB hard drive. The V10 has only Ethernet port and comes without WiFi. It is priced at 1600 Yuan, which is about $230 USD. Well this cheaptop is not bad for personal use and affordability; you could replace your low cost laptop once you’ve spared extra bucks for a Dell Mini Inspiron. (wink)

Sony have delayed the European launch date of the PS3 due to production issues - the machine will now be released November 2006.

Stuffed to the brim with top secret ninja technology (possibly), the PS3 promises to level the competition by simply looking at it. With a sneer. It's a cocky beast, but who can blame it? If that's not enough, then get ready for Blu-Ray - an all new disk format storing a mahoosive 20GB per disk, allowing developers plenty of space to stretch their imaginations, as well as giving movies enough room to look truly awesome.

Gameswise there's plenty on the way, with all your favourite games putting on their best HD frock and 5.1 makeup, and a whole host of original titles are bound to be bubbling away in development heaven.
